Here are our tips for creating an effective website design brief

A clear and well detailed website design brief is the foundation upon which a successful website is built. By focusing on and identifying the overall goals, target audience and functionality will help both you and website designer understand what you want your website to do. So here we have a few tips to creating a great design brief.

Who is your target audience?

By profiling your target audience it helps to focus both the design and features of the website to the target market. Describe what you think a typical user coming to your new website might be like. How old you think they might be and what might they do for a living?

What primary action would you like your target user to make?

What is the primary action that you would like the user to take when coming to your website? For example if you require an ecommerce website design you might want them to purchase products or services or if it's a small business website you may want them to become a member or fill out an enquiry form.

Perception and company brand and image

How is your business currently perceived offline and do you wish to carry the same kind of message and colour scheme through your website? Will you use the same company logo, slogan or branding?

It's always a good idea to maintain your company identity through your website and printed material, but if this is a new website or a new brand for an existing small business then tell us what colour scheme, image and general message you want to portray.

Who are your competitors?

Every business has competition so you need to make sure you have a professional website design that differentiates you from your competitors whether that’s though design, service, features or price. Take the time to list a few competitor websites and tell your us what you like about these websites and indeed what you don't like about them.

What websites do you like?

This is pretty easy one, give your website designer a few examples of websites that you like, they don't have to be your competitors, just websites that you like, maybe it's the website design or functionality features you like, tell us about them.

Do you require website hosting?

Having your website design and hosting provided by one service provider is a great idea. It keeps costs down and means that you only have one person or company to go to for advice and support. If you need website hosting tell us how much traffic you think you will receive or how many visitors you currently receive if you already have a website. It will enable us to set-up the correct hosting package for your website tailored specifically to your requirements.

So there you go; just a few tips to help you create an effective website design brief. If you need help with your brief contact us, and we'll send you our design brief which many of our customers find really useful when thinking about a new website design.
