Don’t lose sales with a poor ecommerce checkout page

One of the most common mistakes in ecommerce website design is the checkout page. The rest of the site can look fantastic and have everything else right (good product page design, great navigation and good product descriptions), but when the customer gets to the checkout page it all goes wrong, you study your analytics data and see a frighteningly high cart abandonment rate.

So what can you do to ensure your customers have a great checkout experience? Well here's a few tips that we integrate with our ecommerce solutions and they are very effective.

Don't force users to create an account.

Forcing a customer to create an account is often a deal breaker and can cause cart abandonment. Of course it's a great idea to have customers create an account on your ecommerce website so they can stay up-to-date with your latest news and product offers and this usually helps generate repeat business. However you need to give customers the choice of checking out without an account for those customers that simply want to checkout quickly.

Too many pages during the checkout process.

The less pages the customer has to complete during checkout the more likely they are to complete checkout, It's that simple. The same goes for information you ask the customer to give, think about what information you really need and only display what is important and on as few pages as possible.

Not enough payment options

Not everyone wants to pay by credit or debit card so you need to offer a diverse range of payment options in order to convert as many customers as possible. Consider adding PayPal, Google Checkout or other alternative payment gateway to your list of payment options. You don't have to have an endless choice but a few of the popular payment options will cater for most customers.

It goes without saying that we incorporate all of these tips into our ecommerce website design solutions and with great success too as our clients see increased conversion rates and more repeat sales.
